Preview

The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Chicago White Sox to Rogers Centre on Saturday, July 18, with first pitch set for 3:07 PM ET. Shane Bieber gets the ball for Toronto against Chicago's Davis Martin in an afternoon matchup that gives the Jays a prime opportunity to add to their win column in front of the home faithful. The game airs on Sportsnet and TVA Sports locally, with Canadian radio coverage on SN590 THE FAN. With the second half of the season underway, every home date at Rogers Centre carries weight for a Blue Jays club looking to make its mark in the AL East.

Starting Pitching: Shane Bieber vs. Davis Martin

Bieber draws the Saturday assignment and immediately gives Toronto an edge in the pitching matchup. The right-hander has been one of the more experienced arms in the Jays rotation, and home starts at Rogers Centre have given him the comfort of a familiar environment. Bieber's command will be the story to watch — if he's working efficiently and keeping Chicago off the bases early, this game has the feel of a Toronto-controlled afternoon.

On the other side, Davis Martin gets the nod for the White Sox. Martin is a right-hander who has moved in and out of the Chicago rotation and will need his best stuff to keep one of the more dangerous lineups in the American League at bay. Toronto will be looking to make him work deep into counts and get into the Chicago bullpen early.

Keys to Watch

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the Middle of the Order

Batting third, Guerrero Jr. remains the engine of the Toronto offence. When Vlad is locked in, the lineup around him becomes significantly more dangerous. With Springer slotted behind him at cleanup, opposing pitchers face a punishing one-two combination in the heart of the order. Martin will have to make quality pitches here, or Toronto can do real damage early.

Jonatan Clase at the Bottom

Clase hitting ninth adds a legitimate threat to the bottom of the order. His presence means the lineup doesn't have a true soft spot, and it puts pressure on Chicago's pitcher to work through the entire card without a breather.

Bieber's Efficiency

The key to a Toronto win is Bieber giving the club length. If he can navigate Chicago's lineup — which features Murakami and Benintendi as legitimate threats — with minimal damage through six-plus innings, the Jays' bullpen can close it out. Anything short of that puts pressure on a relief corps that needs rest protected.

Prediction

The pitching advantage leans Toronto's way on paper, and Rogers Centre should be loud for a Saturday afternoon game. The Blue Jays lineup has enough depth to generate runs against Martin, and if Bieber settles in quickly, this is a game Toronto should control from early on. Jays win, 5-2.
